[Webinar] US Policy Direction for Platform Regulation: Reponses to Concerns of GAFA monopolies and the Future of US Antitrust Law

Korea University’s Innovation, Competition and Regulation Law Center (ICR Law Center) held a webinar on 10th September 2020, covering the current expected regulatory trends in the US. 

 

The US is currently examining its stance on large scale platforms and tech companies and weighing its antitrust policies. In order to understand the future of platform regulation in the US and its implications for Korea's competition law and policy, we invited panelists with US antitrust enforcement experience, as well as professionals with academic and legal experience in US antitrust law and discussed the current expected regulatory trends in the US and ways (or needs) to adapt the tools of competition policy to the newly raised challenges.

[Webinar] EU Policy Direction for the Platform Industry: New Competition Tool and Digital Services Act

Korea University’s Innovation, Competition and Regulation Law Center (ICR Law Center) held a webinar on 30th, July, 2020, covering the expected regulations in the EU, the New Competition Tool and Digital Services Act, and their implications for Korea's competition law and policy.

 

After a brief overview of the EU’s approach, our special guest Ms. Zsuzsa Cserhalmi from the DG Competition, the Commission, introduced the policy direction and answer questions. Then Korea’s panel of experts discussed the EU’s ex-ante and ex post regulatory initiatives for platforms and their implications for Korea's competition law and digital policy.

KIM Sang-Jo, Chairman of the Korea Fair Trade Commission Speaks 2018

The ICR Law Center invited the Chairman of the Korea Fair Trade Commission (the “KFTC”) KIM Sang-Jo in cooperation with the Korea Fair Competition Institute and Sogang University ICT Law and Economy Institute to hold a speaking event on the direction of Fair Trade Policy in 2018.

At this meeting, the KFTC stated that their goals for this year aimed at improving the quality of people's lives to go beyond institutionalization by improving market practices and real transactional terms through the establishment of a fair market economy.

The KFTC also emphasized that it is important not only to revise the Monopoly Regulation and Fair Trade Act but also to create synergies with related laws such as corporate laws, capital market laws and criminal laws. This created much enthusiasm for the KFTC’s future role.

The 7th Rising Scholar Conference and the 5th Paper Contest for Graduate/Undergraduate Students Awards Ceremony

On November 9th, the ICR Center held The 7th Rising Scholar Conference and the 5th Paper Contest for Graduate/Undergraduate Students Awards Ceremony.

 

The Rising Scholar Conference is an annual and meaningful academic conference to encourage the scholars who newly received his or her doctoral degrees to have successful academic careers in the future. At the conference, one specialist, Jung Dayoung Ph.D. delivered valuable and inspirational lectures. Jung, lecturer of Korea University, gave a lecture focused on ‘Law, Brands, and Innovation: In the Fashion Industry Context’.

 

The ICR Center’s annual Paper Contest for Graduate/Undergraduate Students is designed to find a way to solve our social and economic problems by means of legal studies and to promote the innovative capabilities of graduate/undergraduate students. The ICR Center have selected 4 top-notch theses statements and the contest-winners’ presentations and awards ceremony was held after the Rising Scholar Conference. The ICR Center is planning to develop the annual contest, encouraging outstanding students interested in legal studies henceforth.
